My Computer Does Not Recognize My USB Drive

In the a previous post, My Computer Does Not Recognize My USB Drive, I showed you how to assign a drive letter to a USB drive. In this post, I’ll show you how to map a USB drive if it it not recognized by the computer.

First, if you can, plug the USB drive into another computer to see if the device works. If you are using a USB extension cable, try another cable or plug directly into the USB port on the computer. If using a USB hub, also try plugging into the computer’s USB port.

If the USB drive works on another computer, plug the USB drive into the computer and then:

Click on Start

1. Right Click on My Computer, click on Properties
2. Click on the Hardware tab
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers section.
5. Look for any yellow exclamation marks.
6. Right click the item with the yellow exclamation mark.
7. Select “Update Driver” and follow the wizard for installing a driver.

Device Manager

If the USB device is not recognized after installing the drive, or the driver did not install, go to your computer manufactureer’s website and download all the latest drivers and install them.

NOTE: Some computers like some Dells, may need the chipset drivers installed/updated in order to update the USB controller.

Try to plug the USB drive again to see if it is recognized. If all went well you can now see your USB drive in Windows Explorer.

If you still can’t access you USB drive, review this checklist.

  • Try it in another computer.
  • Make sure the power cable is plugged into the USB drive, if applicable.

2. Check the USB ports on the computer.

  • In the left pane of the Computer Management utility, click Disk Management.
  • In the lower right pane, find the USB drive
  • Right click the drive and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
  • Click Change and on the right side click the down arrow and select a drive letter.
  • You will only be given open drive letters to choose from. Click OK and Yes.

4. Check the USB driver

  • Right Click on My Computer, click on Properties
  • Click on the Hardware tab
  • Click the Device Manager button.
  • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers section.
  • Look for any yellow exclamation marks.
