An ounce of prevention can save your laptop LCD screen. If you have a laptop, you know that the LCD screen is susceptible to scratching and other maladies. One of the trends that our shop has seen of late is an impression the keyboard is leaving on the LCD screen.

After months of use, the LCD lid, when shut, starts to make contact with the keyboard. Over time this contact causes a permanent impression in the LCD.

Some of the causes is usually in the design and wear and tear. As the laptop gets broke in, the hinges begin to losen and allow the contact to be made between the keyboard and LCD panel. This is a common problem with the Dell Latitude D600 and D800 models.

Another cause, the rubber bumpers on the lid that provide a cushion between the lid and case begin to wear down or come off completely. With worn or missing bumpers, the LCD will rest on the keyboard.

Luckily, a little prevention can prevent damage to the LCD screen.

  • Keep the rubber bumpers in place and replace worn bumpers.
  • Keep the latch screws snug. See your owner’s manual or manufacturer’s website.
  • Keep a piece of felt or other thin soft material on the keyboard when the lid is shut.
  • Clean the screen regularly.

An ounce of prevention and some preventative maintenance can prolong the life of your laptop LCD screen.
