Yes, it happened again. Despite all the warnings and advice to back up data, one unlucky computer owner had a hard drive failure without warning and lost all his data.

He was using a Dell Optiplex GX240 with Windows XP. The computer had been running fine. Then he turns on the computer one the other day and it happened.

BSOD. The dreaded blue screen of death. This one read “unmountable_boot_volume“. After checking the hard drive connections and the BIOS, the computer still would not start.

I took the Seagate hard drive out and hooked it up to my USB IDE Adapter. The hard drive powered up and the USB adapter light came on but the hard drive was not recognized by my computer. I checked the mapping and the hard drive was not even there in the Disk Manager.

I tried for several hours using different adapters and recovery software but could not get the hard drive recognized.

All data lost. No backups. No warnings. It just crashed.
