You may have noticed a “ExpressCard” slot while shopping for a new laptop. ExpressCard technology is a fairly new technology that is expected to replace PC cards.
Compared to a PC Card
PC cards are more or less a PCI card for laptops. The PCI standard is being replaced with the PCI Express standard. Like in desktops computers, laptops will upgrade from PC cards to ExpressCards.
What’s the dif?
- PC cards can transmit data at 132MB per second and ExpressCard can transfer at 2.5GB per second.
- ExpressCards come in two widths, ExpressCard/34 and ExpressCard/54. The ExpressCard/54 is L-shaped and is the same width of the PC card. The ExpressCard/34 is about half the width of the PC card.
- The ExpressCard/34 will work in a ExpressCard/54 slot.
- PC cards will not work in ExpressCard slots.
Benefits
- ExpressCards use less power than PC cards which means less battery drain for laptop users.
- ExpressCards standard will be coming to desktop computers and an ExpressCard can be used on both your laptop and desktop computer.
- More powerful, faster, and better performance.
Which laptops?
Many of the big names are going to ExpressCard technology, but Dell is one of the first to offer the new ExpressCard standard in their laptops. Laptops with ExpressCards are the Dell Latitude D830 and the XPS M1710 just to mention a few.
