How to stop your kids from going to myspace.com by editing the HOSTS file.
Myspace.com is notorious for being a site where predators prey on kids. At this time myspace.com and other social sites are unable to keeps kids safe from harm. Besides, parents can take better care of their children’s welfare than a socila website.
Complete online safety is for another post. Here I will show you how you can prevent your kids from going to myspace.com and facebook.com.
To prevent access to myspace.com and other sites is an easy task and only takes a few minutes. However, there are a few things to consider:
- This technique only works on the computer that you apply this technique to.
- There are ways around this solution by savvy kids.
- This technique is not a substitue for comprehensive online safety. In in previous post, I listed some websites for good online safety advise. The post is at www.simplepctalk.com/tips/8-websites-for-kids-safety-online/.
Click the film icon below to watch step-by-step how to edit your HOSTS file. The video will open in a new window.
Here is the entries made in the HOSTS file in the video. Copy and paste this list into your HOSTS file.
127.0.0.1 myspace.com

127.0.0.1 blog.myspace.com

Remember, this only works on the computer in which the HOSTS file is edited. If you have a router, you can block websites in your router setup. Check your router manual or website for instructions. And nothing replaces your supervision of your kid’s online activity.

Great post, thanks…this will be useful. I can think up a couple of ways to get past this block, but my students aren’t that tech savvy, so I’m not worried. Again, thanks for the tips.

@jblu,
Thanks for visiting and your comments.
Yes, this technique is not the best, but I am writing a few more tip about blocking that are a little harder to get around. Remember, there is nothing better than supervision.
Thanks,
