Must Know Shortcuts Too Hot — Melted Computer
Sep 15

You know what internet connection speed that your Internet Service provider (ISP) claims that you will get with their service. But those promised speeds do not always, if ever, live up to the hype in reality.

You can check your actual Internet speed for free with an Internet connection speed test at InternetFrog.com.

On the right hand side menu, click the Broadband Speed under My PC.

Internet Speed Test - Start

The results look something like the image below. By the way, my ISP promisies connection speeds of 10 Mbps.

Internet Speed Results - Graph

Here are the stats that appear below the graph. See definitions below.

Internet Speed Results - Stats

Taken from InternetFrog.com:

Download: The speed at which your Internet connection downloads data to your PC from the Internet.

Upload: The speed at which your Internet connection uploads data from your PC out to the Internet.

QOS: InternetFrog.com reports the Quality of Service (QOS) for your connection, which represents the level of consistent download capacity provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). The higher QOS percentage, the higher the overall quality of the connection - which results in better connections for high traffic applications, such as streaming content (audio, video, VoIP calls, etc.)

RTT: The Round Trip Time (RTT) reports the total time in milliseconds (ms) to send a small data packet and obtain a reply back. The smaller the RTT score means a faster the connection.

Max Pause: Max Pause is the longest pause recorded during the data download. This should be a very small number. If not, it could indicate Internet congestion or a bad Internet connection.
